Starting Off on the Right Foot: An Overview of the RA Position for New RAs

Description:
Institutions across the country hire qualified students to serve as student leaders in Resident Assistant (RA) or Community Assistant (CA) positions. Students who accept these vital positions need to have an understanding of what they have gotten themselves into! This webinar recording will provide information that is both specific and generic to the RA position. Although it is not required, it is suggested that participating institutions spend 30 minutes following up with the webinar attendees after the program, to review specific information regarding the position on their campus.
Overview:
This webinar will cover the following topics:
- What is an RA?
- Why do we have RAs?
- Perceptions of RAs
- General expectations of RAs
- Communication of expectations
- General time commitment
- Tasks to consider doing during the summer/tips for success
- Where the position can lead in the future
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- List at least two roles of an RA
- Identify at least three reasons why institutions hire RAs
- Explain at least two expectations of RAs
- Identify at least three ways that they will know if others are meeting their expectations and vice versa
- List at least three general time commitments associated with being an RA
- Consider where the RA position may lead in the future

Participants should plan to review a copy of their Position Description, if available. The Webinar Recording will be forwarded to you via internet download and Windows Media Player will be the required playback software to access the recording.
Instructor Bio:
Joanne Goldwater is the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life and a sign language instructor at St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public, liberal arts, honors College. She has a B.S. in Deaf Education and a M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has worked in higher education for over 20 years, and has been a frequent presenter at regional and international conferences, including ACPA, MACUHO, and ACUHO-I. She is a contributor to Reslife.Net, and Residence Life Executive. In March, 2010, she presented four workshops in The Gambia, West Africa. Joanne is passionate about her work and her family, which includes her husband, three stepsons, and two cats.
