Description:
Communication can be overwhelming! Crafting your message, selecting your audience, and then getting your message out there requires conscious planning if you want your communications to be consistent and understood. This course will examine some of the ways a conference and events program can develop a communications plan to get their message to the right people.

Outline:

  • Week 1: Developing a strategic communications plan
  • Week 2: Tools available to get your message out there
  • Week 3: Annual reports

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a strategic communications plan
  • Identify appropriate channels of communication
  • Write an annual report
Participant Expectations:
Participants will work per their own time availability, and should plan to spend approximately 3 to 4 hours per week in this course. This will include time to read materials, complete on-line exercises and surveys and participate in discussion with other course members via list serve.

Participants will need to respond to questions posted on a list serve that will allow for communication amongst class participants.

The final week of the class will involve a live presentation that will be recorded and made available to participants who cannot attend the live event.

Instructor Bio:
Tom Flynn is Associate Director of Conferences & Visitor Services at the University of Maryland, where he manages the events and summer conferences programs. Currently, he is chair of the Industry Visibility committee for ACCED-I. He is also a Past President of ACCED-I. Tom has presented at various industry conferences and conducted webinars on such topics as contracts, annual reports, and developing a one-stop shop.
